Our Week In Review

Our week has been very busy!

In writing we have continued to work on writing fiction.  Many students enjoy coming up with their own stories, while, for some, it is a challenge.  We are continuing to work on this and have discussed that we "read like writers and write like readers".  Reading picture books and short fictional texts helps students to understand fiction writing.

We began our second Interactive Read Aloud this week.  Little Dog, Lost, by Marion Dane Bauer is a story, written in poetry form, which follows two main characters.  Mark is a boy who longs for a dog of his own, and Buddy is a dog, looking for her boy.  The children are really enjoying this book. We will focus on looking at the author's craft and theme while reading.  Students are looking for similes, alliteration, personification and hyperbole as well as looking for evidence to support theme.  Tracking for our reading logs next week should be one of our new skills.

We are working diligently to finish our studies of Canada and the weather before our December break.  There will be assessments in the next few weeks, and your child will have  study guides to support their preparation.  Creating a Quizlet is a great way to study!

In math we are well into our study of division.  Students are becoming more and more confident with their division with practice. Videos on the blog can support those who need a reminder of the steps involved with dividing.  Students should be using xtramath to practice math facts at least 4 nights a week.  As we continue learning, students should not need their easy multiples as often.  We will have a division assessment in the coming weeks as well.

Today fourth graders all participated in the Hour of Code!  We LOVED it and many students expressed interest in continuing this at home.  If your child is interested, check out this website.

Remember to check out the Fourth Grade News blog for information about the Hour of Code and other fourth grade happenings.
