Our Week In Review

What a week!  We returned from February vacation with many stories of our weeks!  From beaches to ski slopes to comfortable temperatures right here in Franklin, our students really enjoyed themselves.

After settling in, we had a terrific week!

During math this week, we have been exploring the relationship between fractions and decimals. We worked on using number lines and models to compare decimals and we used blocks to visually see the decimals. This is a new concept, and will take some time for the children to master.  Today we reviewed some of the concepts from earlier this week, and the children felt much more confident. We will continue to practice!  This unit will last at least another week.

During reading we finished reading Snow Treasure. What an exciting ending !  Ask your child about the exciting ending to this book!  Check out our ratings!  We will celebrate Snow Treasure on Monday and then we will move on to reading some myths. We will be building sleds and snowman towers, as well as completing an assessment and playing charades.  If your child is interested in bringing in a "snow themed" snack, we will use the snacks for a math activity.

We also finished learning about the Southeast Region of the United States.  As part of our study, students created slideshows in Google, sharing their knowledge about this region.  Your child can share his/her slideshow with you through Google.  On Wednesday we "traveled" to Indiana, where we met some 4th graders over Skype.  Our Mystery Skype was a huge success!  Students asked and answered yes/no questions, and used their geography skills in order to find our new friends.  If you know someone to connect us to another fourth grade class anywhere in the country/world, please reach out!

Read Across America Day was a huge success!  We began our day with a whole school assembly. We heard a story and then listed as our fifth graders performed.  Check out our twitter feed for a video of the performance.  We took pictures of everyone in costume, and even tweeted to some of the authors. We even heard back from a few!!!!!

Book Talk!

Today we enjoyed a gallery walk of the fifth grade Birds of Prey projects!  What a great experience to see former students sharing their knowledge.  The fourth graders had the chance to ask questions and learn about a variety of birds.

Our weekly questions this week involved school and kindness.  Check out our thinking!

We enjoyed some time sharing our writing!

Next week we will begin our new Life Science unit- Animal and Plant adaptations.  We will travel to the Midwest Region of the U.S in Social Studies.  We will celebrate Snow Treasure on Monday and explore some STEM activities.

Please take a minute to take our March Parent Survey. Thank you!
