On Monday we were treated to another visit from our anthropologist, Mrs. Silvia, from the Haffenreffer Museum at Brown University. She brought artifacts and information about the Native Americans from the Plains. What an amazing opportunity to learn by seeing, touching, and even drumming and dancing. Thank you Kennedy P.C.C.!
We wrapped up our study of Mythology this week, and performed short, one-act plays for our classmates. Most students really enjoyed reading and performing these plays. We have some actors in our midst!
Throughout the year, we have discussed point of view as it connects to stories the children read. Who tells a story really impacts the way the story is told. We have graduated to writing from different points of view. We read The True Story of the Three Little Pigs by Jon Scieszka. This is the story of the Three Pigs as told by the wolf. If you haven't read it, here is a video. It is a funny version of the classic.

We also continue to share the books we love through book talks! Many students have given one (or more) book talk! This is a great way to practice speaking in front of a group, and to share. Ask your child if he/she has given a book talk this year!
After reading this story, we read Little Red Riding Hood by James Marshall. The children worked in teams to rewrite the story from the point of view of the wolf. The children did a great job! Ask your child about his/her version. You're sure to have a chuckle.
In Math, we have started to learn about units of measurement. We will begin with customary units (length, capacity, weight), and then will move to metrics.
We were treated to another free author visit this week! Lisa Yee visited Kennedy school and we learned so much! She was funny and entertaining as we learned about her journey as a writer. She took so many pictures with us, it was great! Check out her website, I bet she puts up some pictures of us! I know that she did Tweet us out to the world! Thank you to An Unlikely Story bookstore for bringing her to us!
We have been learning about Greek roots to help us to understand new words.
We are ready to start a new
interactive read aloud, The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate and the students are very excited! We will connect our reading to our science unit about Animal Adaptations by observing various animals through animal cameras throughout the world. Our focus will be largely on elephants and gorillas. Check out the book trailer for this book. It is a wonderful story, and a quick read for adults, too!

We are also learning about the midwest region in social studies. Ask your child about his/her research.
We continue to build our community, with our daily morning meetings. This week we enjoyed another compliment circle.
