Our Week In Review

What a week we had in room 24!

During math, we have been working at extending and applying our knowledge of geometry concepts through projects.  We worked to create a town based on certain criteria, and will move on to creating designs using lines and angles.  The children have enjoyed these projects!

We continue to read about Charlotte and Wilbur, using the reader's theater model. Our students are enjoying "voice acting".  They are able to show their understanding through their expression. Our class discussions have been rich, and we have made several connections between the characters in Charlotte's Web and those in The One and Only Ivan. We also finished our Charlotte's Web puzzle on Friday!

Book Talk

During Writer's Workshop, we continue to work on researching our nonfiction topics, with a focus on adaptations.  This natural connection to science has been motivating for the students, and has allowed them to delve deeper into their learning.  Our research is completed using books as well as the internet, and we are collecting our facts using colored index cards.

This week we enjoyed 2 Skype visits!  We were treated with a virtual field trip from the Joshua Tree National Park in California.  During this visit, we learned about the park, as well as the plants and animals that live there.  It was a terrific experience!  Later in the week, we enjoyed a Mystery Skype with a school from Arizona! (Thank you to Mrs. Zarrella for connecting us!).  This is a wonderful way to apply our geography knowledge while meeting friends from around the country.  We will continue our travels to the Southwest Region of the US in the coming week.  Students have begun to improve their knowledge of states and capitals, in order to prepare for our culminating social studies event, The Amazing Race.

Our science exploration is focused on magnetism and electricity.  Students will explore building circuits this week.

Rock Poetry Day was a HUGE success! Music lyrics are a wonderful form of poetry, and the students enjoyed analyzing them in a new way.  We visualized others' lyrics, and shared our thinking about the songs.  What a wonderful way to connect our study of poetry to something the children understand!
Thank you Mrs. Williams for Skyping with us on Friday!

On Friday afternoon, we learned how to tie our t-shirts for Tie Dye Tuesday.  We worked together, and are excited to see how our designs turn out!  Stay tuned!

Our Week in Review

The weather has gone from winter to summer in just a few days!  Despite the hot weather, we have been working hard and learning each day! Students were very excited to finish MCAS this week, and they should feel proud of their perseverance!  We wrapped up our geometry unit, and took our assessment today. We enjoyed reviewing using a Kahoot!  Students took their paper copy of the test home, and can also access their electronic copy on the Pearson website. We will extend our knowledge of these skills through two geometry projects over the next few weeks.

We have really enjoyed reader's theater this week, reading Charlotte's Web.  This story is one of Mrs. Merten's favorites!  As the children leave each day, they share their "best part of the day".  This week reading Charlotte has been a class favorite!

During writer's workshop we have been working on nonfiction writing.  Students will be researching over the next few weeks, and then they will write nonfiction texts.  Ask your child what animal he/she is researching.  If you have books at home, please feel free to send them in.

Thank you to everyone who volunteered to help with our spring events!  We have enough volunteers for both Tie Dye Tuesday and the Amazing Race. Students, remember you will need state and capital knowledge for the Amazing Race!

We have started to learn about magnetism and electricity in science. We shared what we already know and what we want to learn, and  began exploring magnets. This hands on unit is usually a student favorite! Check out our twitter feed for some videos of students exploring magnetism.

We created posters to cheer on our JFK friends as they left for the Special Olympics!

Ask your child about his/her "green screen" video.  This project is becoming a reality!

Students have been enjoying running our morning meetings!  Building friendships and our classroom community has been so special this  year.  Check out some of the nice things we had to say about our turn and talk buddies.  We also began to share advice for incoming fourth graders.

Mrs. Merten didn't realize her singing was so popular!
