The Beginning
Mrs. Merten was born in Boston, Massachusetts, FIFTY years ago. She grew up close to Franklin, in Wrentham, with a view of King Philip High School, where her mom was an art teacher. Mrs.Merten's dad was a teacher, too, and then he became a principal. Mrs. Merten knew she wanted to be a teacher ever since she was a little girl. She is the second of four children. Her sister, Amy is the oldest, and her two younger brothers are Paul and Bobby. Mrs.Merten went to Wrentham Elementary School, King Philip Jr. High School, and Bishop Feehan High School. She was a cheerleader in high school (this won't surprise you once you meet her!).

After graduating from Feehan, Mrs. Merten went on to Providence College in Rhode Island, where she studied Elementary and Special Education. She received her Masters of Education Degree in 2009, in educational technology. She met her husband, Mr. Merten while in college. Mr. Merten is a teacher also! He teaches high school history in Upton, MA. They love to go camping and spend time with our friends and family.
Mrs. Merten has two children, Sam and Grace. Sam graduated from Bridgewater State University a few years ago, and he works in the Dover-Sherborn Schools. He hopes to be a history teacher one day! Grace is entering her senior year at Bridgewater State University. She is also studying to be an elementary and special education teacher!
Mrs.Merten began her teaching career at Truro Central School, on Cape Cod. There were only 96 students in the whole school! She started teaching at Kennedy School in the fall of 1992. At that time, she was the only resource room teacher in the building. Later, she taught fifth grade and then second grade before finding her favorite grade - fourth grade. This will be her nineteenth year teaching fourth grade!
A note from Mrs. Merten ~
I believe that Kennedy School is a special place, whether you are a student, a parent or a teacher. The sense of family and community here is something so unique. I love my job here, and I wouldn't trade it for another, anywhere. I have so many wonderful friends here at JFK, but my best friend here is Mrs. A. Williams. I feel lucky to work with such a wonderful friend. We love to spend time together, both in and out of school. You will find that our classes love to do things together, too!
