Our Week In Review

What a terrific week of learning!  We began our week with our grade level meeting.  We enjoyed trying to keep a balloon in the air without using our hands.  These meeting are a great opportunity to connect with our friends across the whole great.

Reading Update
Book Talks
We have finished our nonfiction reading/writing about dogs, and celebrated with our Dog Day celebration. This day was cut a bit short due to the delay of school, but we enjoyed many fun activities, including pictionary/charades, making origami dogs, graphing dog snacks and "dog math".  Students brought in many fun snacks, including dog shaped cookies and scooby snacks!  Thank you for your support with this!

DOG DAY SNACKS

We began our next Interactive Read Aloud- Snow Treasure by Marie McSwiggan by reviewing some background knowledge.  This is an adventure and historical fiction story that takes place during World War II. Next week, ask your child about this story.  There will be a lot to talk about!

Writing Update

We continued writing essays during writers workshop this week.  We enjoyed doing another "Write Around" about the topic of amusement parks! Next week we will develop one of our topics further into an essay.

Science Update
We discussed internal and external structures of insects this week, and explored the different types of insect mouths.  We completed an exploration with the other fourth grade classes, and discussed different ways that insects get their food.

Social Studies Update
We have been exploring the Northeast Region of the US.  Students are reading a variety of nonfiction texts to gather information about important people and places, natural resources, geography and climate, and Native Americans. This group work will be presented in the form of a slideshow in the next few weeks.

Math Update
We wrapped up the first part of our fraction study, and the students did well on our assessment.  We will continue learning about fractions, with a focus on addition and subtraction of fractions.  Students should continue to practice their multiplication and division facts, as knowing these will help them find equivalent fractions more easily.  If your child is not feeling confident with fractions, please know that we will continue to work with these, and there is a daily opportunity to meet at the "teacher table" for review.  Please encourage your child to check with me if he/she would like some review strategies.  We did a gallery walk of our fraction posters, and enjoyed checking out each other's work!  Check out some of our posters below!

Check out our Dancers of the Week!! (We danced to Who Let the Dogs Out!- What a fun way to finish our dog unit! (Thanks Mrs. A.))
