Our Week(s) in Review

We had a busy week and a half in room 24!

During math we have started to learn "Long Division".  We will be using the partial quotients method to solve division problems.  Learning this process takes time!  Homework help videos can be found on the homework help page. 

During reading, we have continued to read our Interactive Read Aloud, Little Dog, Lost.  We have focused on figurative language, author's craft and theme in this story.  The students have loved reading about Mark's strong desire for a dog.  We will finish this reading after Thanksgiving break, and then we will be focusing on reading nonfiction texts during the month of December.

During science we have been learning about the Earth's crust, earthquakes and volcanoes.  Students mapped out volcanoes in the Ring of Fire, and we learned about the plate boundaries below the Earth's surface.  We created a model to show how the tectonic plates move to cause earthquakes!  After break we will continue to study Earth Science.

We had the opportunity to practice using our map skills in a truly authentic way.  We participated in our first Mystery Skype.  Students asked YES or NO questions of fourth graders in a different part of our country.  We used the answers to narrow down where they were from- MARYLAND!  The students in the other class asked us questions as well, to determine where we live.

Today we had the awesome opportunity to skype with scientist, Jean Pennycook.  Ms. Pennycook was live from Antarctica where she studies the Adele penguins.  Many of the students are considering a career working with live animals after her virtual visit!
