Happy Diwali!
Today we learned about Diwali, the festival of lights, celebrated in India. Diwali, Deepawali or Dipavali is the Hindu festival of lights, which is celebrated every autumn in the northern hemisphere. A few of our ladybugs shared about their traditions, and one even brought pictures!

Our Week In Review
What a week! During our morning meeting, we are learning how to say good morning in the languages of our classmates. We are looking forward to learning how to say this in many different languages!
In math, we have been working on patterning with both shapes and numbers. Determining the rule for a number table is challenging but our mathematicians are doing a great job. In class, we used manipulatives to help us see the pattern and then transfer that to numbers in a table.
Book Talks continue to happen during reading. Mrs. Merten is encouraging everyone to think about giving a book talk this year. We are ALMOST finished reading Mr. Popper's Penguins in reader's workshop. Next week, we will finish reading this book, and then we will begin reading and discussing short non fiction texts about penguins. We wrap up our first Interactive Read Aloud with "Black and White" Day on Thursday. Remember to wear your black and white clothes and bring a black and white snack!
As part of writer's workshop, we finished writing paragraphs about our names, and have been writing poetry. This week we began learning how to use a dictionary. We will continue this important work next week.
Learning about Mexico has been exciting and fun for our room 24 ladybugs. We have learned about the geography, climate, and natural resources of Mexico. We will continue learning about this country next week.
There are two half days next week and Halloween, so our week will be short but busy! I am looking forward to meeting parents and guardians at conferences next week.

Our TWO Weeks in Review
Last week, we had our first visit from the Haffenreffer Museum at Brown University. Mrs. Silvia will come to JFK four times to teach our students about various Native American tribes in the United States. Last week, we learned about the Natives of the Northeast. We also learned how archaeologists are able to find out more about them through archaeological digs. Then we participated in a dig! Thank you to the JFK PCC for funding this amazing experience.
During Social Studies we wrapped up our study of Maps and took our first assessment. The children did a great job! This week we began learning about the country of Mexico.
We wrapped up our first Engineering and Design project last week. Students designed a vehicle that can move through wind power. We had our Puff Mobile Race this week. We all learned so much about the process of designing and about working in a group. We will continue to practice this process throughout the year.
During our morning meetings, we continue to learn more about our classmates. We have found out so much that we have in common with friends we have known for many years!

During Reading, we have been practicing our mantra "Reading is Thinking!". Students have been working on making predictions and asking questions while reading Mr. Popper's Penguins. They have also been practicing this during their independent reading time. Mrs. Merten has been working on tracking Mr. Popper's character traits, with help from the students. Students will be looking at characters and their traits throughout the school year. Students continue to volunteer to share the books they have loved. This is a great way to practice speaking in front of a group, and is awesome for our readers to hear what their friends are reading.
We are almost finished writing about our names and how we got them. Students have been working on typing this, while learning a few technology skills. After this has been published, we will be working on writing some narratives, and writing two fall poems ~ Halloween Haikus and list poems. Your child should have much to share about these assignments.
We wrapped up our study of multiplication and division today. The children have been working hard at learning their facts! We took our assessment today and many of the students thought it was longer and harder than previous assignments. Everyone persevered ! We will be learning about number and shape patterns next week.
The Harlem Wizards came to JFK today ! We enjoyed our contest (Mrs. M. and one of our classmates played basketball and we won!). Look for information about the Wizards game coming home soon! It is a great fund raiser for the Franklin Education Foundation.
We wrapped up our week as we do most Fridays, by sharing our "High, Low and Bet you didn't know".
