Happy New Year!
Welcome back and Happy New Year!
It was a great start to 2016 in Room 24!
In Math, we have started to learn about fractions. These concepts can be challenging, but the children are doing great so far! We have created our own fraction bars, and will continue to practice. As you know, math fact practice is no longer optional. Knowing multiplication and division facts is essential for students to achieve the most success they can in math. Students may practice using flash cards (with a parent signature on their log) or they may use any computer site or game. Students should be asking parents for a signature nightly, indicating that facts were practiced for at least 5 minutes. Parents, please encourage your child to use the online enVision resource during our study of fractions. This is an excellent resource!
During Reading this week, we began reading our next Interactive Read Aloud,Snow Treasure. This story takes place in Norway at the start of WWII. The children are enjoying the sense of adventure that this book brings! During this book, we will be studying author's craft (including word choice, use of dialogue and cliffhanger), and we will be studying character feelings and connections, as well as genre.
We began to learn about essay writing this week as well. The students are thinking of things that matter to them, and will be writing essays in the coming weeks. During Poetry Workshop we wrote Weather Poems.
During Science we have continued our study of Weather, focusing on water and humidity. In Social Studies we have started our journey across the United States by learning about our country and the different regions in it. Next week, we will begin our focus on the Northeast Region.
During technology workshop over the last few weeks, we have been creating videos to "help" other fourth graders. Many students finished these today, and they have been published here. Students who haven't finished will be working on them next week.
