We participated in a STEM project, where we created sleds out of household objects. Students followed the engineering and design process, and then raced their final projects. This was a terrific connection to our last Interactive Read Aloud, Snow Treasure.
In Reading, we finished reading Greek Myths, and made connections to modern day heroes through nonfiction reading. Students worked in groups and then individually to read about modern day heroes and identify the qualities of heroes.
During Writing, we finished writing "Chapter 31" of Snow Treasure, and shared our chapters with the class. The children enjoyed hearing their friends' ideas about what happened to Peter after Marie McSwiggan's book ended. We have been learning about point of view in both reading and writing, and students are working on writing some favorite fairy tales from a different point of view. This has been an enjoyable assignment for many children!
Social Studies brought us to the Southwest Region, where we learned about the climate, natural resources, geography and important people from the region. Students worked in groups to gather information and then share their research. We traveled virtually to the Everglades, where we learned about the climate as well as the plants and animals that live there. What a great experience! We wrapped up our study with a SS quiz, and everyone did great!
This week we also participated in a Mystery Skype with 4th graders from Georgia! Our fourth graders did a fabulous job practicing their geography skills while asking thoughtful question about location. Way to go!
Twice a week students answer questions when they arrive at school. Their answers jump start our sharing at morning meeting. Check out some of their thoughtful responses!
