Our Week In Review

Welcome back and Happy New Year!

It was a great start to 2015 in Room 24!

In Math, we have started to learn about fractions. These concepts can be challenging, but the children are doing great so far!  We have created our own fraction bars, and will continue to practice.  You have probably heard that math fact practice is no longer optional.  Knowing multiplication and division facts is essential for students to achieve the most success they can in math.  Students may practice using flash cards (with a parent signature in their assignment book) or they may use the xtra math site.  Students share their methods of practice each day.  Congratulations to Nihara! Today she was the first student to make it "Around the World" in math!  Keep practicing and you may make it too!  Parents, please encourage your child to use the online enVision resource during our study of fractions.  This is an excellent resource!

During Science we have been learning about weather instruments, and how they help meteorologists predict the weather.  Many students are making barometers at home for extra credit.  We can't wait to see what they learn!  We enjoyed learning about air pressure from Bill Nye The Science Guy!

You can see the other short Bill Nye video here.

During Reading this week, we began reading our next Interactive Read Aloud, Snow Treasure. This story takes place in Norway at the start of WWII. The children are enjoying the sense of adventure that this book brings!

We began to learn about essay writing this week as well.  The students are thinking of things that matter to them, and will be writing essays in the coming weeks.   During Poetry Workshop we wrote Weather Poems.

Next week we will begin to learn about our country during Social Studies. We will "travel" to each region in the coming months. We will be looking for fourth grade classes from across the U.S. to Skype with our classes.  If you know a teacher (or a 4th grade student) in another state, please check in to see if they're interested in this.
