Our Week In Review

We had a very busy couple of weeks in room 24!  Thank you to the Franklin Fire Department for sharing information about Fire Safety this week.  The children learned a lot about how to be safe in their homes.

In math, we have been working hard at learning the customary and the metric measuring system.  There will be a quiz about this topic next week, on Wednesday. We will follow that up with the U.S. Measurement eXtreme Games.  Thank you to everyone who has sent in materials for this.  We are set with materials.  Thank you to Mrs. Mac who taught some students how to play God Bless America, and to Mrs. Hess who provided time for the students to crate U.S.A. themed decorations.  Check in with your child on Tuesday and Wednesday to hear how things are progressing with this event! (Students should wear red, white and blue on Wednesday.)

Flat Stella went over math homework!

We continue to read about Ivan, the shopping mall gorilla.  We are learning about point of view, and are enjoying hearing the story through Ivan's voice.  During Readers Workshop we have had many thoughtful discussions about the characters in this book, as well as about the theme in this story. We also have enjoyed observing various animals from around the world.  There are many links to different elephant and gorilla cameras on our curriculum links page. Your child will have much to share!

Flat Stella helped with animal observations!

We began our non-fiction writing unit this week.  We are working on this with Mrs. Williams' class. Though many students had set ideas about their non-fiction topics this week, they have grown and stretched themselves, and are considering new topics.

This week we learned a lot about the Southeast region of the U.S.  Students became experts on a topic, and then taught their classmates.  Your child's project can be viewed in their Google folder.  We also traveled to Canada for a Mystery Skype! We met a 5th grade class from Nova Scotia!

Next week we will wrap up our study of the weather.  We will learn about storms and how they form.  Our weather assessment will be on April 14th.
