Our Week In Review

We officially began our new science unit ~ Plant and Animal Adaptations this week.  We will be learning through inquiry based learning, Students have asked (and will continue to ask) question about adaptations, and we will look for answers through hands on activities and experiments.

Our study of fractions and decimals will wrap up this week with our scheduled assessment on topic 13 on Wednesday.  Our week-long fraction posters came out great.  We had the opportunity to check out each other's work through a gallery walk.  We will review for our assessment on Monday, and will celebrate PI Day on 3.14 with various math activities.  Please remind your child to wear comfy shoes for our relay and to bring a pie or circle shaped snack if he/she is interested.  In the event of a storm, the test date may be adjusted.  Students will be given this information on Monday when we have more details on the storm.

We had a blast on Snow Treasure Day!  We enjoyed 2 STEM building challenges ~ building the tallest free standing "snowman" tower, and building a sled.  We followed the engineering process, and discussed our redesign ideas.  We also played Win, Lose or Draw with Mrs. Williams' class, and completed an assessment about the story.  Ask your child about this day, it was loads of fun!

We began learning about mythology this week, and the students have really enjoyed this!  We have been reading mini myth books, and connecting the heroes in mythology with real life heroes.  When time permits, we have used the Mythic Warriors series to show that myths have different versions, and to compare/contrast them, and students have been reading graphic novels and various other versions of these myths as well.

During Creative Arts Friday we have been working on writing raps with Mrs. Williams.  The children have enjoyed writing these and some have even performed them!  We recorded our book trailers/math help/technology help videos, and they came out great!  We are working to find a quiet "recording studio" in order to make these videos the best they can be!  During PBL, we continue to work on our National Park research and projects.  We were so happy to be back to this!

We were lucky enough to have someone from the U.S. Post Office at JFK this week for an official unveiling of the John F. Kennedy stamp.  We heard a great message about the benefits of writing letters.  Ask your child about this!  On Friday, we wore our crazy socks and JFK school colors, and had a whole school Community Meeting focusing on our core value of respect.  Ask your child about this!

This week, during one of our morning meeting times, we had a "compliment circle". Students gave one another genuine compliments, and worked at receiving these compliments.  The children were very thoughtful in their compliments!

Good News!
