Wow! It sure was cold this week! The students made it through, even with 5 days of indoor recess. If you think it was cold here, imagine how they felt in the Midwest!
We got right back into the swing of things in room 24! In math, we continued to learn about fractions. With the long break and snow day, we needed to do some review, but we are moving right along. The children made fraction posters over the snowy weekend, and we had a chance to check them all out on Monday. They are hanging in our classroom now. Here are a few of our posters.
Today, as part of the review of "fraction of" problems, some of the students were able to explain some math reasoning to the class. Check out their teaching moments below!
Our math test is scheduled for Wednesday, with a review day planned for Tuesday.
This week in reading we discussed non-fiction text features and structures, while reading about weather and Canada. We discussed the different ways non-fiction can be presented and learned the strategy "skim and scan". Students will continue to practice reading non-fiction both in the content areas at school, and during reading zone.
During reading we were treated with a book talk from Sarah about Nancy Drew! Many of you will remember the old Nancy Drew stories. We talked a lot about the old adage, "Don't judge a book by its cover!" Though the Nancy on the cover doesn't look like she belongs in 2014, Sarah thought the book was awesome! We have many children waiting to read it.
We finished our fiction stories! Mrs. Merten is very excited to read these over the weekend. Next week we will make time to share these stories and celebrate! We have also been working hard on our poetry, and are almost finished writing our poems about Ivan, and our December poems. Some of the students were able to start writing weather poems today with Mrs. Williams.
WE are wrapping up our instruction about weather maps and about Canada, and our tests will be next week. Study guides were sent home this week, and are also linked to the blog under Important Documents. Please let Mrs. Merten know if you have any questions.
Technology this week was a blast! We were given our Google Drive user names and passwords, and we signed in and created our drive! We also received a message from Mrs.Merten, and completed a survey. Look for more surveys on our blog in the coming weeks!
And for the students....Look what Mrs. Merten found in Sam's room! Three Calvin and Hobbes books! You can check them out on Monday!!!!
