We are almost finished reading The One and Only Ivan, by Katherine Applegate, and the children have just loved this story! He is slowly turning into the silverback that we all knew he was! During this read aloud, our focus was on finding the theme, and supporting it with evidence from the story. We also discussed the characters, their traits, and how they changed throughout the story! The children did an excellent job thinking deeply!
The story is based on the true story of a gorilla named Ivan, who lived in the B & I Mall in Tacoma Washington turning the 1990s-2000s. Check out his story below. If you would like to read this book, we are happy to lend a copy to you!
This week we enjoyed visits from poet laureate Elizabeth Gordon McKim. "Miss Liz" shared her talents, and students wrote beautiful poems, in the spirit of "An Ear to the Earth." Miss Liz taught us about poetry in the oral tradition, and we participated in a poetry reading. We are grateful to the JFK PCC for funding this amazing experience for all!
We continued our Social Studies trip to the West Region, and made connections to our learning today, when we heard about the Kilauea Volcano erupting! We traveled to this National Park last week using Google Expeditions!
In math we continued to study Geometry, and we even learned how to measure angles using a protractor! We will take a short break from this unit during MCAS next week, and will finish it up with an assessment on May 15. A study guide will be sent home next week.
We ended our week with Dance Party Friday and Star Wars Day. May the Fourth!!!
