Our last TWO weeks

We have been very busy learning in room 24! Our measurement unit is in full swing!  We have been discussing customary and metric units.  Check out our curriculum pages where you can find some great measurement games. Our measurement assessment will take place next Tuesday and students have a study guide for this.

To celebrate Women's History Month, each day in March we have read about a famous American woman from She Persisted, by Chelsea Clinton.

During Word Study we are discussing word parts and their meanings.

During reading, we finished reading Greek Myths and made connections to modern day heroes through nonfiction reading. Students read about modern day heroes and wrote about the qualities of heroes.  We began our next interactive read aloud this week.  The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate is always a favorite of fourth graders. During reading, we will focus on point of view, characters (and how they change over time) and theme.  Ask your child about this book!

During Writing, we finished writing "Chapter 31" of Snow Treasure, and shared our chapters with the class.  The children enjoyed hearing their friends' ideas about what happened to Peter after Marie McSwiggan's book ended. We have been learning about point of view in both reading and writing, and students are working on writing some favorite fairy tales from a different point of view.  \Your child should have much to share about this.

We finished our Washington, D.C. projects and we were able to view each other's work through a gallery walk Students have been doing a great job making comments about one another's work, and are thoughtful in their feedback.  Social Studies brought us to the Southeast Region, where we learned about the climate, natural resources, geography and important people from the region. Students will take an assessment on this region tomorrow.   We traveled virtually to the Everglades, where we learned about the climate as well as the plants and animals that live there.  What a great experience!  


We enjoyed several special events over the last few weeks.  The Franklin Fire Department came to talk about fire safety and the importance of having an "escape plan".  Also, and Unlike Story bookstore brought author Andy Griffiths to JFK.  He talked about his series The 13-Story Treehouse.  It was a fun presentation.
