Our Week In Review

Our first week back after February vacation was busy! We began our week with our grade level meeting.  After our meeting, we all listened to a positive affirmation about setting goals and effort.  Some students continued listening to this throughout the week.

We finished reading Snow Treasure, and the children LOVED this historical fiction novel.  All students rated this book an 8 or higher (most students rated this a 9 or 10).   This week, we showed our understanding of the text by drawing part of the text and sharing our thoughts about each other's drawings.  Your child can share more about this.  We will continue to read about kid heroes in the next week, and make connections to this story.  During writing next week, we will be writing the "next chapter" in this book with a partner.

During math this week, we continued to learn about fractions and decimals including the relationship between fractions and decimals and place value of decimals.  We will continue this new learning for another week, and our test is tentatively scheduled for the following week.

As you know, we began our study of Washington, D.C. this week.  At this time, students have chosen 4 monuments/memorials to research and they have received their final copy paper. We began our research this week with mostly teacher direction and modeling. Next week, students will be given time to research in class, with teacher support. Final copy and drawings will be done at home.  Please remind your child to bring his/her note taking packet back and forth to school.  Students received a calendar with a suggested timeline for this project.

We were grateful to have Mrs. Perry, former JFK PE teacher, as a guest reader earlier this week.  Mrs. Perry read the book Game Changers: The Story of Venus and Serena Williams. What a wonderful way to wrap up Black History Month.

From the Teacher's Desk:
Organization and responsibility continue to be areas of focus for the children.  Many students are having difficulty completing and returning homework regularly.  Although our focus in fourth grade is independence and responsibility, some students may need a parent check in at home.  This is a good time to revisit homework routines at home, and make changes if needed.  In school we continue to have a dedicated time to write in our assignment books, gather materials and pack up.
