Our Week In Review

It was wonderful to see so many families at our Open House on Thursday!  Friday morning, our conference sign up went "live" on Sign Up Genius.  If you haven't had a chance to sign up for a parent/teacher conference, you can do so here.

This week we wrapped up our Launching Unit during Reader's Workshop.  In this unit, we learned our reviewed many reading skills that we are going to use as the year progresses.  Specifically this week we discussed reading genre, character traits, and theme.  We will continue to discuss these important ideas throughout the year, in our independent reading as well as during our Interactive Read Alouds.  Students have been working on writing in their journals, and have enjoyed reading Mrs. Merten's responses.  We will continue working on the Reader's Workshop routines as we move into our first Interactive Read Aloud, Mr. Popper's Penguins, next week.

During Math we have continued to practice our addition and subtraction computation skills. We will have our second math assessment, on topic 4, on Tuesday.  Students took home a study guide this week.  If your child needs practice with math facts, they can do this using these games.  If he/she would like the challenge of a timed quiz, this is a great option!

We have been moving steadily through our learning of map skills in Social Studies. During Science this week, we focused on the Water Cycle, and have created our terrariums.  We will observe the Water Cycle throughout the school year in our terrariums. We enjoyed creating these with Mrs. Williams' class.

During Poetry workshop, we have been learning about Walt Whitman, and have started writing our list poems. Check out this draft by Colby~
Things to do if You're a Pretzel

Stay thin and tall
Don't crisscross like other pretzels
Take a bath in salt
Sneak into a package

(stay tuned for the final copy!)

During technology workshop we discussed the importance of using editing tools carefully and accurately.

We have continued with our first Engineering project, The Puff Mobiles.  Almost all groups are at the testing or redesign stage.  We hope to have our race next Friday!
