Our Week In Review

There is so much to report on from room 24 this week!

In math, we finished our unit about addition and subtraction, and we had our assessment.  Mrs. Merten was so proud of all of us for our hard work!  Students took home the assessment worksheet with their score after the test.  If students or parents would like to look at the test questions, the test can be viewed on the Pearson Realize site.  All students should be comfortable logging in.

We began our first Interactive Read Aloud (IRA) book, Mr. Popper's Penguins.  You may have seen the Jim Carrey movie that was made a few years ago, which was loosely based on the book.  The book is MUCH better! During this IRA our focus will be on tracking character's traits and using prediction as a reading strategy. To launch this book, we received a very interesting package in the mail.  Your child can share more about this!

We have continued to work on Narrative writing, and have been working on reviewing skills about writing these pieces.  Next week we will continue with drafting our Narratives.

In Social Studies, we have continued to work on our Map Skills, and have started to understand how latitude and longitude can be used in our real lives.  If you own a portable GPS and are interested in experimenting with it, check out Geocaching.  This is a fun way to connect our learning outside of the classroom, and a great outdoor activity!

In Science we have seen the water cycle working through our terrariums!  This week we began to look at science through the eyes of a scientist, and have started an experiment.  We made hypotheses and have started our observations.

We were lucky enough to have a visit this week from Mrs. Silvia, our anthropologist in residence.  She comes from the Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology at Brown University.   Mrs. Silvia will come to JFK 4 times this year, to share information about Native Americans from 4 regions of the US.  This week we were able to learn about the Natives of the Northeast, and participate in a simulation of an archaeological dig!  We learned how archaeologists use the information they find in order to understand the people who came before them.  We are very grateful to our Kennedy PCC for funding this awesome program!

Today was the BIG DAY!  We had our Puff Mobile Race!  We learned so much about the engineering process during this project!

Students ~ take a minute to answer this survey about Friday's fun events.

Congratulations to our second team to earn the "Terrific Teamwork Award"!  Keep up the great work!
